The Labor Education Program is very excited to announce that we’re offering Labor Leadership Academy (formerly the Certificate in Labor Studies) and the Labor Law Certificate programs in person for 2021-22. We invite you and your union family to sign up and attend these amazing classes taught by Labor Education Program faculty and staff. All state and federal COVID guidelines and precautions will be followed.
To receive a certificate of recognition you must complete all the courses in the program but you are welcome to take one-off courses for no certificate.
Labor Leadership Academy – In this series you will learn: about the people who built the labor movement in the United States and some key struggles and triumphs in labor history, how “right to work” laws, “gig” work, and automation are changing the economy, the basics of labor and employment law, how to write and investigate a potential grievance, how to mobilize your colleagues around important issues, and the ins and outs of collective bargaining.
Labor Law Certificate Program – In this series you will: learn about the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA,) Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA,) Illinois Public Labor Relations Act (IPLRA,) and Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act (IELRA,) among others, be introduced to essential Constitutional rights, statutes, and regulations, you will study case law, learn the basics of legal research and interpretation, and engage in an intensive legal writing workshop.
