Our Labor Leadership and Labor Law courses are offered in person only at this time. They are offered once a year, starting in the fall.
To receive a certificate of recognition, you must complete all the courses in the program, but you are welcome to take one-off courses without a certificate.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Payment in full is required before attending the first class unless alternate arrangements have been made in advance.
- Labor Leadership Academy: $700
- Labor Law Certificate Program: $600
- You will receive a certificate of completion after taking all classes in the series.
- We do not currently offer make-up sessions for missed classes. If you miss a class, you will have to wait until the series runs again next fall.
- Classes require a minimum of 8 students to run. If we do not have adequate enrollment a week prior to class, we may cancel the session.
In this series you will learn: about the people who built the labor movement in the United States and some key struggles and triumphs in labor history, how “right to work” laws, “gig” work, and automation are changing the economy, the basics of labor and employment law, how to write and investigate a potential grievance, how to mobilize your colleagues around important issues, and the ins and outs of collective bargaining.
In this series you will: learn about the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA,) Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA,) Illinois Public Labor Relations Act (IPLRA,) and Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act (IELRA,) among others, be introduced to essential Constitutional rights, statutes, and regulations, you will study case law, learn the basics of legal research and interpretation, and engage in an intensive legal writing workshop.
PLEASE NOTE: This class is for union members and other people involved in the labor movement; it is not for human resources professionals or management-side employees. We are considering adding a series for management, but at this time, we do not offer one.
